Welcome to 2nd Semester - first response

Please take a moment to think about the following images & respond with your opinion about their meaning.
Compare and contrast the images and what they are saying to the audience.  Imagine that you as the audience is in favor of smoking... how does image A make you feel?  Imagine you were against smoking...how does image B make you feel?
Image B
Image A

Be sure to include your name in the beginning of your post/comment and use complete sentences with valid points and support your opinion with out repeating others responses.
Due Date: 1/29/13                                                                                              Total Points: 10 points

For example:
[Linenkugel] I feel that the red background in image A definitely helps the viewer see the negative of the concept and it adds to the feeling of warning or being alarmed.  The breaking of the cigarette is an obvious but subtle way of portraying a stance against smoking.  Many people often use the smoke as part of their image... but the exaggerated cigarette works here.  Instead of referencing the result of smoking, it basically shows the promotion of NO SMOKING with out saying it with the typical circle with a line through it.
As for image B, I think that it makes smoking look appealing and fun!  It is like a promotional advertisement for that specific brand.  The loose, wiggly fun cigarette sticks in the box definitely create a fun and exciting atmosphere/feeling (want viewer to want to partake in the action).  They remind me of the candy cigarettes that my kids love to eat - which I sometimes question allowing them to enjoy because of the idea behind them being symbolically so much like the real thing.  (total points = 10 - because of use of complete sentences, compared and contrasted both images and also referenced what they seem to mean to me with specific note of parts of the images)

What is Art? - second response

Please take a minute to decide "What is Art?" to you and respond by posting your response on this discussion board.  Three to Five complete sentences about what you think Art is.
Be sure to be respectful and appropriate - this should be honest and positive (please try to be unique - do not repeat the same answer that another student responds).

Due Date:  Thursday 1/31/13                                                                             Total Points: 15 points

For example:
[Linenkugel]  I think that Art is a way of expressing yourself, your thoughts, beliefs and opinions.  What is Art to one person is not necessarily art to another.  "To each his own" is a well known quote that I would say is something to keep in mind while discussing and looking at various types of art.  I love a variety of art and find that there are some types that I understand more than others.  Keeping in mind that some art is functional, some is purely decorative and some is influential towards/against a specific topic.  I feel that there is a very important place for Art in all of our lives and as to what extent that happens is up to the individual.  I wish to expose all of my students to a wide variety of different types of artists and artworks.  I hope that all of my students will find at least one that they are drawn to and appreciate.  I also hope to inspire even the unmotivated to create their own art and at least allow the experience of creating to happen.
The process is just as important as the finished product.  The finished product should reflect the creativity, personality, ability and effort from the student.  [15 points = b/c the answer is at least 3-5 complete sentences, that include honesty and are respectful, appropriate answers]
